With indoor fitness space at a premium, many leisure facilities are looking for ways to make more of their outside space.
One way of achieving this is by installing a fitness or trim trail - an increasingly popular way of combining fresh air with a workout.
Relatively inexpensive, fitness trails can be designed to complement their surroundings, blending in well with country parks or leisure centre grounds.
Used all year round, trails are also ideal for working out in pairs or groups.
Robert Boyd of specialist suppliers sportsequip.co.uk explains: "We've been involved in setting up dozens of fitness trails in the UK.
"One of the most recent ones is Reynolds Retreat, a new fitness spa opening in Kent this spring."
Jason Hall, MD of Reynolds Retreat, said the possibility of including a fitness trail was spotted early in the development of the resort - partly due to its picturesque surroundings.
"We felt that a fitness trail would expand what we offer our guests, creating a unique spin on the traditional spa/gym combination," Hall said.
"It allows guests to get into the fresh air and breathe in the fantastic setting of the Retreat whilst exercising. We're planning on creating different ways for guests to really make the most of it."
One of the most significant benefits of a fitness trail is the range of workout options it can offer. With people looking to make fitness fun, it seems that trails are a great solution.
