A new book by Malcolm Neesam is a history of the spa resort of Harrogate from the 14th to the 19th centuries.
Harrogate has a unique position in the long history of the use of natural waters for curative purposes and the 448-page Harrogate Great Chronical charts its historical development in great detail, using researched data interwoven with comment on the events and people involved in the town's creation.
One area of interest is the discovery and naming of Harrogate as a spa. This appears to have come about some time after the discovery of the Tewit Well by William Slingsby in 1571, when it was likened to the Belgian resort of Spa.
Another issue covered is the topical subject of water bottling, Neesam's research revealing the date for the first Harrogate bottling to be circa 1630.
The book itself is part one of the work, part two being an accompanying cd containing source and bibliographical material used in the preparation of the Chronicle.
Published by Carnegie Publishing, Harrogate Great Chronicle is available direct from the publishers or from all good bookshops, priced at £25.00.
