The hand-over of Watford Leisure Centre Woodside means the first of two major new facilities for Watford Borough Council can soon be opened to the public by operator SLM.
An investment of £23m was made to build two new leisure centres at Watford Central and Watford Woodside.
The Woodside centre was handed over to the Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill, by Pellikaan on 24 April.
The company has completely redeveloped the existing 30-year-old leisure centre and added a large extension to house 'wet' facilities including a new 8 lane, 25m swimming pool with moveable floor, an 8m x 20m learner pool, and a sauna.
The existing sports hall was completely refurbished with a new floor and wall panels, creating a warm atmosphere as well as high durability, and excellent acoustic performance.
Other facilities include health and fitness, café, treatment rooms, artificial pitch, dance studio, crèche, and squash courts etc.
Sustainability has been a key consideration in the design of the building, which has significant renewable energy features. These sustainable elements will increase its long term viability, both in terms of a reduction in carbon emissions and in running costs.
Examples include high insulation levels, a solar thermal array, rainwater recycling and heat recovery systems to reclaim heat from air and water.
The extended ground source heat pump system, using boreholes of approx. 100m in depth, enables use of the natural heat of the earth. The system also re-uses excess heat generated by cooling.
Elsewhere, heat loss and emission of carbon dioxide by air leakage were reduced significantly.
