A South African design consortium led by Formula D Interactive has won a contract to design and build an interactive audiovisual environment at a Miami science museum.
The interactive media wall project at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science in Miami, Florida is intended to bring the Gulf Stream to life, as well as the unusual creatures which inhabit it but are rarely seen.
Cape Town-based Formula D partnered with two local design and tech firms to make their proposal, which won out over competition from 15 firms from the US, Canada, Germany, and Australia.
The design consortium conceptualised a seamless 18-metre wide projection with a 3D sound system which represents the Gulf Stream, and 3D animations of marine life. Six infrared tracking cameras will pick up visitors’ every move in front of the wall, and the animations will react to this creating an experience similar to a scuba dive.
The Formula D team will now work with Digital Fabric and Black Ginger on the project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
