Technical Surfaces, as the maintenance specialists, and Polytan Sports Surfaces, as the installer, have seen their work at a Birmingham leisure centre be awarded FIFA recommended 2* status for the second year running.
The 3rd Generation Ligaturf surface at Saltley Leisure Centre was installed by Polytan in 2006 and, in addition to purchasing its own equipment from Technical Surfaces for regular in-house brushing, sweeping and debris clearance, the Centre - in the shape of manager John Carrigan - also liaised with Technical Surfaces to create a maintenance programme based on anticipated usage.
This regime uses specialist machinery to first de-compact the upper reaches of the surface and thereafter to clean the upper 6-8mm of the surface, effectively removing compaction whilst also allowing microscopic contamination particles to be eliminated, thus improving the playing and draining characteristics of the pitch.
Months of continued good practice and diligence from all parties were well rewarded when, on 15th October 2007, FIFA officially announced that Saltley had passed the stringent checks and analyses - including assessments of ball roll and rebound, shock absorption, stud slide and deceleration and skin/surface friction - and the pitch was still of a standard high enough to host UEFA Champions League matches and FIFA final round competitions.
The synthetic pitch at Saltley is to date the only community-used facility in the UK to have passed its second FIFA 2* test, reflecting, says Technical Surfaces Company Director, Jonathan Gunn: "A winning combination of a quality installation, a willing team of in-house staff and the maintenance expertise of Technical Surfaces."
